Malaham to the cove, Gordale Scar and Janets Foss

County: Yorkshire

Difficulty: Hard

Duration: Over 2 hours

Wheelchair Friendly: No

This walk's justifiable popularity is reflected in its spectacular scenery. Breathtaking views above Malaham Cove. The stream that tumbles picturesquely over Janets Foss from which a delightful walk through woodland and meadows returns you to Malaham. The scenery and views around Malaham are simply beautiful and are a must to see. The views from the top of Malaham Cove are just breathtaking and on a fine day you can see for miles. The wildlife that can be seen on route is varied from rare cows, sheep and goats at one point on the return to Malaham. The wooded areas are beautiful and all you can hear are the bird twittering and the water from the streams flowing, truly beautiful sights and sounds. Very popular with walkers and dog walkers. Obviously in some areas where livestock roam dogs should be kept on a leash or under close control. You can go off the Pennine track and make your own walk across the tops then make your way back again back onto the track. There is a lovely tea van half way round which is very popular and sited just on the bridge, again a very picturesque site to have a rest. From there go onto Gordale Scar, amazing rock formations and a waterfall that is amazing. Then track back on your route to go back to Malaham passing through Janet's Foss. There are so many opportunities to stop to take photos and some amazing photos can be taken. Leave you mark along the route by leaving pennies in some of the old logs left along the way - you will see plenty of people have done the same all around the route at Malaham Cove and Janet's foss - a strange sight but you feel you have to leave one too!! Spot the old coins! This is a walk not to be missed. I have marked this as a hard walk as there are a few steps to the top of the Malaham Cove and some steep hills to climb at the beginning but well worth the effort. That is the only part that is difficult for this walk. Not really available for wheelchairs but there is a path that can be accessed to the bottom of the cove but that is probably as far as you could go.

A well walked but quiet path round Dean's Head Reservoir located at the base of the Pennines. Pathway takes you through woodlands, down to the waters edge and up some gentle hills for wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Plenty of room for the dogs to have a good run round and play.

Around Swinsty and Fewston reservoirs. Very tranquil. Lots of birds on the reservoirs especially on the Fewston reservoir. Lovely scenery. Flat walk and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Part walking through wooded area, which is full of wildlife. If your dog likes the water there are plenty of areas for him to enter. Plenty of parking at the Swinsty site with an Ice-cream van (which has lovely ice cream!)
